The central pressure point
Jayden Daniels being out shifts Sunday’s Colts-Commanders game toward whether Washington can keep Indianapolis from controlling the ground game. The Indianapolis Colts visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday, October 4, at 9:30 AM ET at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Both teams enter at 1-2, but their defenses have been the common problem. Indianapolis allows 30.3 points per game, 29th in the league, while Washington allows 30.7, 31st; this matchup can turn on which struggling unit finds a way to force empty possessions.
Taylor against the run defense
Jonathan Taylor gives the Colts a clear centerpiece. He has 258 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 66 carries in three games, but Indianapolis’ rushing offense ranks 31st by efficiency despite averaging 103.3 rushing yards per game, 15th.
Washington has allowed only 82 rushing yards per game, third in the league, and ranks 11th in rush defense efficiency. That is the sharpest strength-versus-strength collision: Taylor’s volume and scoring production against a front that has held opponents below their usual room on the ground.
The Commanders’ potential problem is the personnel around that front. Daron Payne, Dorance Armstrong and Frankie Luvu are questionable, while four Washington players are out and 19 more are questionable. Indianapolis also has seven questionable players, including Akeem Davis-Gaither, who leads the Colts with 29 tackles and is questionable.
The passing lanes
If Washington slows Taylor, Daniel Jones has a favorable place to attack. He has completed 65 of 98 passes for 611 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in three games, while Josh Downs leads Indianapolis with 14 catches for 186 yards.
The Colts rank eighth in passing offense efficiency, even as their 203.7 passing yards per game rank 26th. EPA per play measures the expected points a team adds on each snap, and Indianapolis’ offense sits at 0.054 EPA per play, 14th overall; its 50% success rate means half of its plays have produced positive EPA.
Washington has permitted 291.7 passing yards per game, 31st, and ranks 29th in both overall defensive efficiency and pass defense efficiency. Its secondary is further strained by safety Nick Cross being out, with Jeremy Reaves questionable after leading the team with 19 tackles.
Mariota’s assignment
Marcus Mariota takes Washington’s quarterback snaps with Daniels out because of an elbow injury. Mariota has 294 passing yards, four touchdown passes and no interceptions on 30 completions in 47 attempts across two games, and his ball security fits a Commanders offense with only 0.3 turnovers per game, third in the league.
Washington’s best offensive production has come on the ground: 132 rushing yards per game rank eighth. Jacory Croskey-Merritt has 142 yards and one touchdown on 47 carries, but the Commanders meet an Indianapolis pass rush that averages 3.3 sacks per game, sixth, led by DeForest Buckner’s four sacks.
The Colts’ defense is vulnerable once Washington gets beyond the line, however. Indianapolis ranks 30th in passing yards allowed at 291 per game and 32nd in rush defense efficiency, while allowing 141.3 rushing yards per game, 29th. Terry McLaurin, who has 10 receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown, is questionable with a hamstring injury.
What the numbers say
Washington comes off a 33-31 home win over Seattle, while Indianapolis lost 30-33 at Kansas City after opening with a 19-17 win over Houston. Neither club has built a defensive margin for error, so turnovers and third-down stops can loom larger than the raw records.
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, October 4, kickoff is 9:30 AM ET. Sportsbooks’ margin-free prices give Indianapolis a 65.3% win chance and Washington a 34.7% chance.
