The pressure point
The Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans arrive at their AFC South meeting with matching 0-4 records, but the game at Nissan Stadium turns on whether Tennessee can keep its struggling offense on schedule against Houston’s disruptive front. Kickoff is Sunday, October 11, at 1:00 PM ET.
Houston has not converted its passing volume into a winning result, yet it brings the league’s sixth-ranked passing game at 285.3 yards per game. C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,141 yards in his four starts, with five touchdown passes and no interceptions, a clean profile that puts pressure on a Tennessee pass defense ranked 25th by efficiency.
EPA per play measures the expected points a play adds or costs, and the Titans allow 0.072 EPA per play on defense, the 25th-ranked mark in the league. Tennessee has limited opponents to the 10th-fewest passing yards, 220.5 per game, so its task is less about surviving big raw totals than getting Stroud and the Texans behind schedule often enough to end drives.
Can Tennessee create room?
That challenge begins with Houston’s pass rush, which is second in the NFL at 4.3 sacks per game. Will Anderson Jr. has 5.5 sacks, and he faces a Titans line that has allowed only 1.5 sacks per game, the seventh-fewest rate in the league; that protection has been one of Tennessee’s few stabilizers.
The Titans need more than protection from Cam Ward, whose offense ranks 30th in EPA per play at minus-0.135. Their 41.7% success rate—the share of plays that produce positive EPA—also ranks 30th, but Tony Pollard gives them a viable route to a steadier afternoon after producing 221 rushing yards on 54 carries.
Pollard’s work matters especially against a Houston run defense ranked sixth by efficiency and fourth in rushing yards allowed at 83.8 per game. Tennessee scores 13.8 points per game, 31st in the league, while Houston has allowed 27.3 points per game, so the home side’s best chance is to turn its ground game into sustained possessions rather than asking its passing game to carry every series.
Availability and the setting
Houston’s protection bears watching because tackles Aireontae Ersery and Blake Fisher and guard Ed Ingram are questionable. Running back Noah Whittington is out, and two more Texans are questionable, adding uncertainty to a group that has allowed three sacks per game.
Tennessee could be without its most productive receiver: Carnell Tate is questionable with a back injury after leading the club with 268 receiving yards. Safety Amani Hooker is out with a concussion, while tight end David Martin-Robinson is questionable with a hamstring injury.
The Titans have allowed only 20.8 points per game, the 10th-best defensive figure in the league, giving them a foundation despite their 0-4 start. The Texans have scored 21 points per game and must turn their passing yardage into better finishing opportunities at Nissan Stadium.
Houston enters a road game in Nashville, TN, on Sunday, October 11, at 1:00 PM ET as the market favorite. Sportsbooks’ prices give the Texans a 75% chance to win.
