Robinson sets the tone

Bijan Robinson's 59-yard touchdown run on Monday, October 5 gave the Atlanta Falcons the jolt that carried them to a 45-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints at Caesars Superdome.

Robinson finished with 19 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, scoring again from 4 yards late in the first quarter. His opening burst flipped Atlanta from a 43% to a 54% win probability, and the Falcons never trailed after that first 80-yard strike.

Atlanta improved to 2-2 by building a 24-7 halftime advantage, then answering each Saints push with another score. New Orleans fell to 1-3 after its early missed field goal and fumble helped turn a manageable opening stretch into a two-score hole.

Early breaks become separation

The Falcons' defense recovered a first-quarter fumble at the New Orleans 22, and Atlanta turned that short field into Robinson's 4-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead. New Orleans immediately showed life when Tyler Shough hit Chris Olave for 44 yards, setting up Alvin Kamara's 3-yard touchdown at 0:48 of the first quarter.

But Atlanta owned the response. The Falcons opened the second quarter with a 10-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that took 5:58, then added a 29-yard field goal to make it 24-7. Michael Penix Jr. also connected with Drake London for 37 yards during the field-goal march, one of London's five catches for 96 yards.

New Orleans used 16 plays and 59 yards over 7:17 to cut the deficit to 24-10 in the third quarter. Atlanta answered with an 8-yard rushing touchdown, restoring control at 31-10 before Kamara's second touchdown gave the Saints another opening early in the fourth.

Atlanta's efficiency tells the story

Penix completed 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, while Atlanta paired that clean passing game with 205 rushing yards. His 31-yard touchdown pass stretched the lead to 38-17 after New Orleans had drawn within 14 points, and the Falcons followed a Saints turnover on downs with another rushing score for 45-17.

EPA measures expected points added on each play. Atlanta posted 0.55 EPA per play and a 55% success rate, meaning positive EPA on 55% of its plays; New Orleans recorded 0.18 EPA per play and a 42% success rate. The contrast was especially sharp through the air, where Atlanta produced 0.84 EPA per pass play against New Orleans' 0.23.

Shough threw for 286 yards and a touchdown, with Olave collecting eight receptions for 116 yards and Kamara scoring twice on the ground. But the Saints had 50 rushing yards, while Harold Perkins Jr. led Atlanta with 10 tackles and 0.5 sacks. The Falcons host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, October 11, while the Saints host the Minnesota Vikings that day, carrying records of 2-2 and 1-3.
