ESPN is in advanced talks to hire former Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd for its NBA studio coverage, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported Monday. Stein also reported that Dallas fired Kidd in May after five seasons, two weeks after Masai Ujiri was hired as president of basketball operations.
The Mavericks went 26-56 in 2025-26 and ranked 27th offensively and 20th defensively among 30 teams. The offense ranked nearer the bottom than the defense, but neither unit placed in the league’s upper half. Together, those standings describe the team Kidd coached in his final season in Dallas.
Dallas was 23rd in net rating at -5.3, a measure of how a team scores relative to its opponents. That standing adds on-court context to the end of Kidd’s tenure as ESPN pursues a studio role for the former coach.
