Trae Young made four free throws in the final seven seconds and scored 25 points as the Washington Wizards held off the Chicago Bulls 124-120 on Saturday, October 24.
All nine of Young's free throws went in, and he added nine assists. The Wizards outscored Chicago 40-20 in the third quarter and led 103-82 early in the fourth.
The Bulls had led 60-50 late in the second quarter after a 10-0 run, and they were the betting favorite. Washington erased that with its third quarter and built a 21-point lead, its largest of the night.
A second 10-0 run cut it to 103-92, and Chicago scored 38 points in the fourth. Young's two free throws at 6.5 seconds made it 122-115. Powell hit a 27-foot three at 3.4 seconds to make it 122-118, Young made two more at 2.7 for 124-118, and Buddy Hield's layup at the buzzer set the final score.
Caleb Wilson led Chicago with 30 points and 14 rebounds but made 10 of 24 shots and 1 of 9 from three. Josh Giddey had 10 assists, three of them on the Bulls' last three baskets.
Washington's bench outscored Chicago's 41-28. Justin Champagnie had 11 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, and starter KyShawn George scored 22 points and blocked four shots.
The Wizards improved to 2-1, and the Bulls fell to 1-2.
