Game card: New Orleans Pelicans 135, Denver Nuggets 141, with each team's leader
Jamal Murray scored 42 points, and the Denver Nuggets rallied from 23 down to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 141-135 in overtime on Saturday, October 24.
Murray made 8 of 16 threes and 10 of 13 free throws in 43 minutes, and he did not turn the ball over.
New Orleans closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run for a 38-24 lead and led 53-30 in the second. Denver scored 37 points in the fourth quarter to the Pelicans' 18, which sent the game to overtime.
Nikola Jokic had a triple-double with 35 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. His pass set up Aaron Gordon's alley-oop dunk in the final minute of regulation, and Murray added free throws in the closing seconds.
In overtime, the Nuggets outscored the Pelicans 15-9. Jokic made two free throws with 24.3 seconds left for a 138-134 lead, and Dejounte Murray answered with one at the line to make it 138-135. Trevon Brazile made one of two free throws, then floated in an 8-footer with 9.5 seconds left for the final score.
Trey Murphy III led New Orleans with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, and Dejounte Murray had 22. The Pelicans got 51 points from their bench, including 17 points and eight rebounds from Derik Queen. But they made 11 of 38 threes and managed 18 points in the fourth quarter after scoring 38, 35 and 35 in the first three.
Turnovers and free throws offset that bench. Denver committed 11 turnovers to New Orleans' 18 and went to the line 39 times.
Brazile finished with 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Nuggets are 1-1, and the Pelicans are still looking for their first win at 0-3.
